ANSWER to Take The Challenge
The Teal is flying 60 mph which is 88 fps. the range is 33 1/3 yds. or 100 ft. Average shot speed is 1000 fps. It will take 1/10 of a second for the shot to leave the barrel and arrive at the duck. In 1/10 of a second the duck will travel 8.8ft. That's right!! You need a 9 ft. lead to hit the duck. That's why you hear stories of hunters shooting at a line of passing ducks and the 3rd in line falls instead of the first.

I was trying to figure this out and as surprising as it sounds, 9' sounds about right. As you mentioned often our leads are short and resulting in a hit further down the line. I have spent many years hunting divers and being able to see where my shot hits the water, behind those fast low fliers is quite an education in having enough lead. Thanks for the question and answer.
ReplyDeleteHi Terry ~ The ballistics work out to 8.8 ft. of lead. Pretty amazing when you plot it out, actual size. Thanks for taking the challenge. Good job....good shooter!DWT
ReplyDeleteThough I figured out the right answer by the time I figured it out in the field the ducks would have been in the next county. I usually underestimate the lead and see the shot hit the water well behind the ducks. As Ruark's Old Man said, Ducks are Ballistics and I can't argue with that logic.
ReplyDeleteHey Art, LOL! Almost all misses are behind the bird. If you know the ballistics of your shotguns, rifles and pistols you will dramatically increase the chances of hitting a target. DWT
