National Pet Owners Survey Stats

Just in case Inquiring minds want to know, the following information came from the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association 2009-2010 National Pet Owners Survey.

There are approx. 77.5 million owned dogs in the U.S.
Thirty-nine percent of U.S. households own at least one dog.
Most owners own one dog. About 67%.
Twenty-four percent of owners, own two dogs.
Nine percent of owners, own three or more dogs. We would be in the "or more" category!
The proportion of male to female dogs is even.
Nineteen percent of owned dogs, were adopted from an animal shelter. YEP-PEE!!
Seventy-five percent of owned dogs are spayed or neutered.
Even Better!

I was happy that 19% were adopted. Even though we breed Gordon Setters, there are a lot of dogs who need homes and I love hearing successful adoption stories!

I know some of you have adopted dogs.  And Thank You for that!

So There you have it.
The dog gone dog facts of the day!

  2. Wow. I'm with you in the 9% category (with 5 dogs here). And I'm in the adopt-a-shelter dog group (with 2 of ours from the shelter) and another category for bringing home abandoned and starving (with 2 of ours plucked from the back road). One one is purebred - our oldest 13 yr old yellow lab. And the only reason hubby went to a breeder for her was we had just lost our 15 yr old precious mutt, then lost a shelter adoptee who had distemper but we didn't know it, so hubby wanted to make sure we wouldn't lose another one so surprised me with Marigold as a pup. :) I'll always go rescue or shelter from now on...

  3. Theresa, Yes, you're like us, you have one for every category! I promote adoption, as well as "plucking them off a back road"...if they are strays. I hate to see any dog, or animal, homeless, and without food and love. Nothing wrong with have a dog with a pedigree either. They all have their purpose. That's a sweet story about Marigold and her husband,. What a nice guy!

  5. I think every dog we have had was adopted from an animal shelter or picked up off the street or somebody gave it to us. My wife paid $150.00 for our last dog, supposed to be a Jack Russell terrier but it was larger than the breed and was registered but it exceeded our expectations and became my favorite dog and my best friend. I must say though that I liked Benji or Benjamin - from the dog pound. A wonderful dog we all loved so much.

  6. I'm glad to hear it Abe! Adoption dogs do deserve our consideration when getting a dog. I promote adoption 100%. As I have said before, they are not there because they are bad. They are there because a human let them down. I love a rescue story!
