Give Us Your Grouse Report!

Photo's By: Karen Thomason

Everyone that lives in Montana has already had 61 days of their 106 day grouse season.  We'd like to hear how you guys have been doing. Are there a lot of birds where you live? Anybody got a good grouse hunting  story or bird dog story? We'd like to hear from you, if you do.  Also, anyone from other areas that have started hunting, we'd like to hear from you too. In fact, we'd like to hear from anyone who's got a good bird hunting story! Everyone likes a good bird hunting story. (I know you have one!)  How about George & son, Bjorn? How about you Art? Michael? Tim? Dick? Laura?

  1. I'd love to but I haven't been out bird hunting yet. Hoping to get out to Western MD next week. Erin, my little setter, was pretty sick last week with possible pancreatitis. Have her on a low fat diet and she seems to be fine now so I don't have any more excuses. I also didn't want to go out during the deer muzzleloader season which closed this past Saturday.

  2. Poor Erin. Glad she is doing better. Will you be hunting grouse? Do you carry a camera?

  3. She seems ok now. Will need to watch what she eats and follow up with vet. My camera just died on me last week so I need to pick up something soon. I'm heading west specifically for grouse. This will be a first. The manager at DNR gave me some good locations to check so I'll be scouting as well as hunting. Just picked up a small vintage trailer for camping so I'll also be checking out the accommodations for a longer stay. The Savage River also has excellent trout fishing so I'll bring my fly rod too. Stay tuned!

  4. WOW! Okay, now I am jealous! I love road trips and camping. DNR?? Sounds like a fun trip. Hope you get lots of grouse and fish. Can't wait to hear all about it. Will you have a lap top with you? You've GOT to get a camera before you go. This sort of trip requires it! Have Fun, Be Safe, Take Care, and Good Luck!

  5. Sorry, your correct its the Department of Natural Resources. I know the name and responsibility for natural resources varies from state to state. I work for the Department of the Environment so I assume everyone knows the different departments. I'll have a new camera when I leave. I may take my wife's camera if necessary. My wife renamed the trailer the "Dog House"! Limits are low by western standards. I believe its two grouse a day. I believe woodcock are the same. I'm assuming that bird numbers are low by western standards and no road hunting! I signed up for a hunter survey so they can gauge the number of birds encountered for hours hunted. This is a fact finding trip to get the lay of the land and some idea of where to go. The forest is 22,000 acres so there are lots of area to cover. I picked up a Honda generator so I have heat and lights to go with the trailer. This should be be a hoot! We had the first light frost last night so the weather should be getting a little cool by next week. WE've had lots of rain like you but not the cold weather. I have a new upland jacket from cbellas to wear and my little 20 gauge side by side is ready to rock! Trout fishing is also reported to be pretty good with nice hatches of blue winged olives, caddis and stoneflies in the afternoon. I plan to leave Wednesday morning and return Thrusday night. I have a laptop but I don't think I have any access to the internet. I'll keep you posted.

  6. Art, if you only have 2 days, I wouldn't be on that lap top unless it was necessary! Sounds like you got a great set up, the "DOG HOUSE"...(cute), and lots of acres to roam. Will you be able to share the info you get, with all of us? We'll be looking forward to hearing all about it. Again, Good Luck and Have a Great time!!
