One of my Gordons,"Happy", just lost a toe because of a toenail. He is 12 years old and has spent a lot of time in the house over the past winter. His toenails were getting thick and seemed to be drying out. They were dry and some had hollow spots when the nail was trimmed. Normally, being on a gravel run, the nails tend to get worn down. But with the last two snowy, wet, winters, he was not outside enough to do the job. As we learned, if the nail gets too long, it can really cause a lot of problems with their toes. In Happy's case, he got an infection. He was put on antibiotics, but the infection worsened and the toe had to be removed. Keep the nails trimmed or have a groomer do it for you. In case you're wondering, the vet said, In every other way he is in great health for a dog of his age. He just needs more manicures!
