INSTANT BIRD DOG - NO SUCH THING

A few years ago I received a call at 9:30 pm from a young man who had purchased a pup from us and wanted to know how to break the the dog to a gun by 7:00 the next morning. Pheasant season was opening, and he had done nothing to prepare the pup for the hunt. I suggested he let the dog chase a few birds and fire a few shots away from the pup, and then towards him to condition the pup to the gun fire. It worked out o.k. but the point is, we prepare our dogs for opening day months in advance. We train and train and train a puppy all summer so it is ready to do its job as soon as the morning sun tops the mountain September 1st. Some folks expect an opening day miracle. It seldom happens. You get out of your dog, exactly as much as you put into it. Which leads to the next blog..........DWT
