Attention: Calling All Dog Lovers

If you're a dog lover, or especially a Gordon Setter lover, there is a way for you to volunteer to help with the Gordon Setter Rescue Program, with the Gordon Setter Club of America. The G.S. Rescue sets up adoptions all over the country. Sometimes a dog is matched with a person who is 2 or 3 or more, states away from the dog who needs to be rescued. Being responsible and caring, The GSCA doesn't like to ship or send a dog into a home that they have not had an opportunity to visit.

The G.S. Rescue Program needs people to be available, for their area, to visit a possible Gordon Setter home. They would like to know that the person who wants to adopt, has the facilities needed for a Gordon Setter and that the person would give the Gordon a good, safe home, before shipping a dog so far.

They are always looking for volunteers to assist with the home visits.

Gordon Setter Stud - Looking to Breed

Grimm Storli and his Gordon Setter, "Trouble"

I was recently contacted by Grimm Storli, from Kalispell, Montana. He and his family run the Blue And White Motel, there in Kalispell.

Grimm has a beautiful male Gordon Setter, named Trouble. He's very proud of Trouble and would like to breed him to a qualified female, possibly in exchange for a puppy.

This is what Grimm wrote:

I have a beautiful hunting Gordon Setter. He is 7 years old and has a wonderful personality. I was hoping to breed him. I am willing to work with you as far as fee's go. If you need a new dose of genetics, or if you know of a Gordon that is looking to get bred, please keep me in mind.

My dog Trouble is a very good hunter. He stays pretty close, maybe to close for field trialing, but perfect for a person who is not hunting on horseback. I have been around Gordons my whole life and Trouble is one of the nicest "people dogs", I have ever seen. He is sure everyone loves him.

I have trained him, but since he loves hunting so much, and I thought I might be able to field trial him, I had a professional finish his training. Penny Jo Wagner, out of Spokane, would be happy to comment on Trouble's abilities, and is also trying to find a breedable bitch for him. I would love to get another puppy for the breeding fee.

When Life Throws You A Curve Ball......

Dear Friends, Family, Followers, Clients, and all the Wonderful People who visit my blog........

After 2 1/2 years, and nearly 500 hundred posts, it is getting more and more difficult to post something that is new or interesting or useful, to you. I am not a Veterinarian, nor am I a scientist, or an animal behaviorist. (and I've never claimed to be) I am however, a dog lover, dog trainer, and bird dog breeder. My heart is devoted to the Gordon Setter, and will continue to be, always.

With hunting season being only 3 months of the year, and being so dismal the past two years, there are no hunting stories to share. We only breed our Gordon's once a year, and will continue to do that, posting pics and stories about the puppies. As for the rest of the year, I will try to post anything interesting, or helpful, or just entertaining, for anyone who still follows me. My blog will stay in tact for those who refer to the blog when they get their first Gordon, or for those who'd like to learn our training techniques, or opinions on bird dogs and puppies. I will also post information concerning breeding, with our Gordons, or other breeders, and adoption info, for anyone who'd like to post it.

But what I can't do, is continue to do 2 posts a week. I feel like my blog has somewhat, run it's course.

As you all know, sometimes life throws a curve ball, when we least expect it. And when this happens, we must take a look at our life, and sometimes reorganize, shuffle around, and pay attention to new priorities. This is where I am today. I need some time to deal with a situation that demands my full attention, time, and total devotion. I have to step back for a while and take care of these priorities.

Those of you who have become my "blogging buddies", thank you for your friendship, devotion, time, and comments you leave to let me know you were here. You'll never know how much it has meant to me, and still does. Thank You All!

You may see me make an appearance on your blog, when I can find the time, because frankly, I miss your posts and pictures and stories that have entertained or enlightened my knowledge of so many subjects and places. Through you're posts, I have blog traveled to Ohio, Texas, The UK, Alaska, Canada, Colorado, Maryland, and many other interesting places, that I have never visited in person. I have connected with people in my own state of Montana, as well as made friends in my home state of Tennessee. I have even had the pleasure of meeting one of them, LEIGH, in person. You have all enriched my life in some way or another.

I Thank you for that, and I will be back.

Veterinary Orthopedic Surgeons Use Human Technique To Repair Canine CCL

Veterinary Orthopedic Surgeons have developed a procedure to repair the cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) problems in dogs, that is used in humans. Adapted from human ankle surgeries, the surgeons clean up the joint tissue and meniscus of the knee, stabilizing the ligament. With a small incision, they insert a device into the leg that ultimately replaces the function of the ligament. The surgeon drills a hole through the bones to anchor it in place.

Every year, about 1 million canines undergo surgery for torn ligaments in their knees. I suspect most of these are the working breeds and bird dog breeds.

This surgery is quicker and it's an easier way to ease their pain. The procedure has less potential for serious complications with a quicker recovery time than traditional surgery that actually involves cutting the dogs bone.

The surgery costs $2200.00 - 2400.00 and the dog is back on his feet in about 12 weeks with little sign of injury. The dog must be healthy and weigh more than 40 pounds, in order to have thick enough bones to endure the drilling for the connection.

Leroy's Little Freak Accident

I'm sure you all remember Leroy Brown and that I had mentioned in another post that he had an accident which sent him to the Vet for 4 days.Well....Here's the story of Leroy's freak accident.

Dan and I let the puppies out of their kennel to take them to the back yard to play. This was when they were 9 weeks old and there were still 4 puppies here. Everything was going fine until they all decided to go back around the other side of the house. So of course we followed them. But, as you might guess, they made it all the way around the house before we could get to the back! Well, the next thing we know, Leroy and a sibling are standing on our 4 ft. high retaining wall. Dan and I start toward him to head him back, away from the edge....... and off the wall he goes! Our concern was the growth plates puppies have in their joints. He could have crippled himself for life. So, when he got up and took off running across the yard, it was a big relief. He didn't yelp or cry, he didn't make a sound. All we heard was a thud, like the breath being forced out of him. He kept playing and was running around the yard having a great time with his siblings. When it was time to go back to their kennel, about 15 minutes later, we notice something protruding from under his tail. And he wasn't going poop. It looked like a small hemorrhoid and was about a quarter inch long, and smaller around than a cigarette. It was really scary. Dan called the Vet and he told us to bring him in right away. This is when we learned about the sugar and honey treatment for wounds. I did a post : Honey & Sugar Great For Your First Aid Kit. When Dan called our Vet, he was told to cover the exposed tissue or whatever it was, with sugar or honey. So we did.

Dan took Leroy in to the Vets and Dr. Moody examined him. He said this was a very rare occurrence and usually only happens if they get mashed, like being ran over by a car. Apparently Leroy had a really full stomach and when he jumped off, his legs gave out from under him and he landed on his belly. Hard enough to push out something that was suppose to be inside. I don't remember the scientific name, but it was part of the inside of his rectum. The Vet sedated him, put it back in place, put one little stitch in and kept him for 4 days. Food and water was limited, for obvious reasons. When he came home he had white rice and hamburger for a week. After a week, we took the stitch out and everything was fine. We kept Leroy a little longer because we wanted to make sure he was totally healed and healthy before he went to his new home. We took him back for a check up and Dr. Moody says he is "good as new"!

So, you can see why it was easy to spoil him while helping him to heal. I felt responsible, even though I know it wasn't our fault. It's like with kids. You can watch them every minute for days and the second you turn your head, they get into trouble!

Last I heard from Kim, Leroy was doing really good. He goes to work with her and lays by her all day. The patients love his company. Good Dog Leroy, Good Dog!

Honey & Sugar Great For Your First Aid Kit

For many years people have used honey and sugar to treat wounds. Both are great items to add to your cabinet, if you don't already have them. You might even put a small plastic bottle of honey, in your first aid kit for hunting.

Honey and Sugar have many benefits for treating wounds.

Applying a generous amount of sugar or honey can keep the injured cells from dying and actually aid in regenerating new cells.
Honey or Sugar applied to a wound can draw out inflammation.
And last, they both can fight against infection. They are both very clean and act as an antibacterial. Bacteria do not like sugar or honey and will avoid it.

Sugar and Honey will work the same, but because honey is so thick, it covers the wound a little better. After applied, wound should be covered or wrapped. Using sugar or honey is a great way to treat a wound until you can reach a hospital or doctor. And the best thing is, it works for humans and animals.

TWENTY THINGS EVERY YOUNG BIRD HUNTER SHOULD KNOW

1. Wing shooting is challenging, but fun! Missing is part of the process. Don’t get discouraged! After all, this is supposed to be fun. Shooting is 90% mental (or rather instinctual) and 10% mechanical. If you are missing, don’t stress out or over-think it. Just relax, believe in yourself, have fun, follow your instincts, and you will start hitting.

2. You don’t aim a shotgun, you point it! Keep both eyes open and point the gun where you are looking with your cheek firmly planted on the butt of the stock of the gun.

3. A shooting slump will not last forever. This too shall pass! Keep in mind that it is almost impossible to shoot ahead of a bird. If you are missing, it’s because you are most likely shooting behind. Just keep swinging and you’ll eventually catch up.

4. Likewise, a hot streak of shooting― while fun― will not last forever either. If you average one out of every four or five birds you shoot at, you’re doing as well as most other hunters out there.

5. Wild birds are infinitely better than pen-raised. While training with and hunting pen-raised birds may be fun, it can never supplant the real thing. There's just no comparison.

6. Understand that Nature’s way is for game to be scarce. On most days, you will not find an overabundance of birds. This fact has led to the common expression, “sometimes birds, sometimes feathers.” Also, this fact is what makes those days of abundance that much more special. If you find a bird bonanza, count your blessings, say a prayer of thanks, and savor the moment.

7. Boot leather gets birds. Those hunters willing to hike higher or farther will find and take more birds in the long run.

8. Remember all life is sacred. Respect the great game birds we pursue. Never take more than what you are allowed by law. If you are fortunate to take one of these great birds, don’t just stuff them indifferently into your game bag, but always smooth their feathers and admire their beauty. If you wound one, go to great lengths to bring that bird to hand. Always eat what you kill with gratitude.

9. Learn more about the special birds you hunt. Learning about the game birds you pursue, their life cycle, habitat, and food, will not only help you to find more birds, but will enhance your enjoyment of the hunt and appreciation for the birds.

10. The key to wild birds is HABITAT. The timeless words of the movie, The Field of Dreams, “If you build it, they will come” are appropriate for bird hunting. In other words, if you create the habitat, the birds will come.

11. Give back to Nature. Support organizations like Pheasants Forever, The Ruffed Grouse Society, the North American Grouse Partnership, Quail Unlimited, The Nature Conservancy, and the numerous land trusts that are creating and preserving habitat. We can’t succeed without the help of such organizations.

12. Be the kind of hunting partner you want to have. No one likes a game hog, a braggart, a drill sergeant, a whiner, or someone who is dangerous with their gun. A good, considerate, ethical hunting companion makes a day afield that much better. Whereas, a bad companion leaves a bad taste in your mouth for days to come.

13. Take pictures and write in a journal. The hunting memories that you are making right now will become little treasures that you will remember in days to come. Be sure to take pictures and write down in a journal your experiences and I promise that those treasures will only grow more priceless over the years.

14. The man and dog partnership is the height of hunting. As Burton L. Spiller wrote, “I believe it is the inalienable right of every boy to have a dog for his very own, and if he is to hunt with one later in life the early lessons he learns will be invaluable to him.” The companionship of a good dog makes the hunt so much more special. It’s hard to describe, but the relationship between a man (or boy) and his dog is almost spiritual. A hunting dog is a link to the natural world that man cannot have on his own. You will find that when you and your dog hunt together with a singularity of purpose, the master and canine element fades away and you and your dog become partners and buddies. Nothing in our outdoor sports quite compares with that bond.

15. Bird hunting makes you see and recognize unappreciated beauty. Bird hunting takes you to places and makes you see things that you would have never seen unless you were afield pursuing a bird. You will begin to find beauty in places that the world cannot appreciate; weedy, unkempt, tangled, thick, gnarly places, will soon take on a tantalizing appeal.

16. Name your coverts. Naming your covers, or coverts (those secret hunting places of your heart), after a prominent geographic feature or a special experience is half the fun. Pretty soon your covers will have names like: The Royal Macnab, Grouseketeer Ridge, Sunrise Ridge, Hope’s Hill, Grouse Springs, Grouse Rock, The Mini Flat Tops, The Lloyd Christmas Cover, The Sunset Strip, Madman Land, The Trail to Quail, The Knife’s Edge, or even better.

17. Ask for permission to hunt and respect the landowner’s property. Remember that if you never ask a landowner for a permission to hunt good looking cover on private property, the answer is always “no.” On the flip side, remember that if you don’t ask a landowner for permission to hunt his property, but do it anyway, the answer in the future will always be “no.” Most landowners respect a hunter who will come to his front door, look him in the eye, and ask for permission because he knows that this this hunter will respect his property. Respect a landowner’s property, his cattle and horses, his fences and gates and you will be a welcome guest for years to come.

18. Learn the value of classic bird hunting books. In time, you will come to learn that a good book about bird hunting, especially in the off season, is almost as good as hunting itself. Seek out the classics like Burton L. Spiller, George Bird Evans, Corey Ford, Gene Hill, William G. Tapply and others. You won’t regret it!

19. It’s all about the dogs! The time will come when watching your hunting dogs do what they were born and bred to do will mean more to you than the killing of birds. Remember that, at the end of the day, the birds are just the bonus!

20. You hold the future of bird hunting in your hands. Whether your own children and grandchildren will be able to hunt is up to you. You must take action to preserve this way of life both legally and to preserve the prerequisite habitat for birds to thrive. As for potential future hunters, like your own experience with your mentor, you must be the one to show them the way.

Dedicated to Peat's Amazing Grace, "Gracie"

Peat's Amazing Grace, "Gracie" passed away last Saturday in the early morning hours. She was about to turn 13 in November and was one of the sweetest Gordon Setters we've had the pleasure of knowing. She came from Lyle & Judy Wiltse in 1998. She was out of Spencer For Hire and McCullough's Peak Performer. Gracie was named Peat's Amazing Grace, because she had so much of Peat in her background. And, she truly was graceful. She had nice long hair and looked sort of royal when she walked. Gracie was very intelligent, like most Gordon's. She was very responsive to training and knew all of her toys by name. She loved to play fetch. She hated having her picture taken.

She was a joy to watch in the bird field and would never disappoint. She would hold a point for however long it took the gunner to get there.

Gracie had several litters of puppies, until she got a severe infection and had to be spayed.

She was doing pretty well in her old age until she started having seizures. The vet put her on Phenobarbital and it helped her for a while. Then we had to up the dosage and she hadn't had any seizures since. But whatever the problem was, was just too much for her little body to take.

Gracie, you were a good girl and our hearts will be sad for a long time. You made a lot people very happy with the puppies. I hope your spirit is running free and wild with Peat and Happy, Rusty, Freedom, Aspen, and Celtie. We will always love you and remember you.

Where Did All Those Puppies Go?

After planning, breeding, and raising a litter of puppies, one of the most satisfying aspects of the whole experience, is seeing the happy faces that are the new families for our puppies.

This is Debbie & Scott . They took Delilah, who was renamed Macey Mae. They have a great place for Macey Mae to run and they have other dogs so she already has "brothers and sisters". And talk about Lucky Dogs...these guys get the whole basement and even have their own couch! (Uh...Make sure that doesn't get back to my dogs please.)

This is Seth & Poncho. He is the son of a couple, who got a puppy from us years ago. Seth grew up with that Gordon and said she was the best bird dog he'd ever seen. We couldn't be happier that he came to us for his first Gordon Setter, and he and Poncho are together. I know they're going to be best friends and great hunting buddies. And Seth kept the name Poncho.

This is Michael & Lucy, who is now Sure Thing Ginger Snap. Cute, right? They seem to hit it off right away! Michael lives in Alaska and flew to Seattle, drove to Montana, picked up his puppy, drove back to Seattle, then flew back to Alaska with her. Now that's love! I can only imagine all of the adventures ahead for these two!

And this Jen & Carl with Sally, who is now Sure Thing Golden Gale. They've got two little kids and expecting another one in December. And imagine.... they wanted a puppy!! Didn't take the puppy long to know who the "mama" was!

This is the Morgan Family with their puppy, Nadine, who they named Chloe Jo. Look at those smiling faces! I just know, Shelly is going to spoil Chloe rotten.

This is Carrie with Lefty, who was given the name Fenway. That's her family in the next picture. Carrie fell in love with Lefty from his pictures on my blog. She was determined to own him. She clawed her way up the list and staked a claim! I hope Fenway knows how lucky he is!

This is Kim, with her friend, Wally, and Leroy Brown. Kim named him Gordie, after her father Gordon. Kim has adopted a lot of dogs and rescued them from certain death. But she decided she wanted a Gordon Setter this time. And she hunts! Wally has had a Gordon Setter before, so he will be of great help when it comes to the field work.

This is Brian & Tina with their first Gordon Setter, Layla. They gave her a great name, Surething Brandy You're a Fine Girl. Call name, Brandy. I love that!! Brian has already been very busy with Brandy. They've been out in the woods and tracked through little streams with her new buddy, a golden retriever. She has had a .22 shot over her and getting ready to experience the sound of a shot gun. She has already started pointing a grouse wing. WE ARE SO PROUD.

Brian sent this to me this week. Look at Brandy! .....I'm so impressed! Way to Go Brian and Tina!

Well, there you have it. That's the whole list for this litter. We're so lucky that we always meet the nicest people who want one of our puppies. I know that our puppies have great homes with these folks and I can't wait to see what they do together.

Karen & Leroy

Leroy is gone now. He was here about 2 weeks longer than the rest. He had a little accident while he was here (another post) and he had to spend 4 days at the Vets. It was a little traumatic for the little guy. When I picked him up to come home, he made little whiny sounds and cuddled up to me licking my face. I think he was happy I came back! When he came home, we had to watch him, play with him, baby him basically, and we had to put him on a special diet. When I take care of a puppy almost every hour of the day, oh yea, I get attached. I tried my best not to. I really did. Just look at that face!

I miss Leroy. He's such a likable little dog. He is very smart and always attentive. When you talk to him, he listens and tries to understand. Cocks his head from side to side. If you make a noise, he watches to see what you're doing. We taught him "Sit" in about 4 or 5 tries, in 2 days. He caught on very quickly. He was almost house trained when he left. As a matter of fact, when I took him outside, I could say, "go pee" and he did.

I brought him in the house a couple of times a day, to start some house manners. In between we played in his outside kennel. He would lay on the floor by me and have a chew bone. I miss that. Especially at night.

We raise Gordon Setters because we love this breed so much. Having puppies is a wonderful experience for the whole family. The experience I have gained and the things I have learned have been invaluable. Having a great hunting dog that will put up birds when other dogs can't, that's pretty special too.

It's difficult to not get attached to our puppies. We plan these puppies, watch them be born, and sometimes assist with the birth, sometimes assist with feedings, and watch them grow into little dogs with so much potential. We care for them 4 to 5 times a day, playing, talking, kissing, cuddling them to get them socialized to people. And at about 7 to 9 weeks, we send them out the door with a client and sometimes never hear from them again. It's hard to let go.

Something Is Missing This Year.....

Our good friend Tim, is having some health problems and we sure have missed him during this opening week of grouse season.

Tim ordered a pup from us nearly 20 years ago. That was "Moxie". When he lost Moxie he came back and got another puppy, "Cassie". This is Tim's words about how it all got started for him.

Like many folks who have our pups, Tim became a life long friend.

He has been with us opening week, for farther back than I can remember.

We have missed his ear to ear grin and the excitement he brings to a covey flush. BIRDS, BIRDS, BIRDS!!!! He acts like a kid most of the time and it brings out the kid in all of us. We've had a blast and we're not done yet!!

During the Invitational Grouse Hunt at our house in Montana, Tim won the 1995 "Top Gun" Award T-Shirt for the best shooting of the week.

Leroy Brown

It's hard to believe the puppies are almost 10 weeks old. Leroy Brown is the only puppy left. We're keeping him just a little bit longer. It's been hard for him to lose his brother and sister who left this past weekend. JJ has a tendency to get a little rough when weaning them so we usually don't put a puppy back in with her after a certain time. And it's not that JJ is being mean, or unmotherly, it just seems to be her way of keeping them from nursing. She holds them down with her paw, and jumps around like a kangaroo! It's all fun and games.....until someone gets hurt! lol Even after being weaned for about 4 weeks, they still try when they get with her. Heck, they try to nurse Gracie if they can get to her. Puppies are funny. Gracie is the old girl and she just looks at them like, "What the...?"

So this has left us to entertain and play with Leroy several times a day. He is also learning how to be in the outside kennel alone, for an hour or so, without freaking out. He has really adjusted well in just a few days. We put him in the inside kennel at night across from Gracie and that way he knows he is not alone. It's a tough job, playing with the puppies, but someone has to do it!

This week, since we only have little Leroy left, I decided to take a variety of shots instead of a posed pic with Dan.

So....Here's Leroy Brown.....he has a new BLUE collar now. No more paper colors for him!


A rawhide chew bone is good entertainment. Just when he gets it worn down and is about to bite off a piece, I trade it out for a new one. He's really too young to be swallowing rawhide.

This is the funniest toy! It mocks the dog, makes funny sounds, has flashing green eyes, and turns in circles. It is activated when the puppy touches it. Leroy went crazy barking and bouncing around!

He was very brave when he's butt was sitting on my feet!

He wanted to play, he wanted to bite it, but he just couldn't get up his nerve.....

So he just ran in circles around it, barking like mad.

The good part was, it really wore him out! He sat still in my lap for probably 30 minutes. That's really good for a puppy of his age. Usually they can't sit still.


And finally, it was lights out. He couldn't keep his eyes open any longer.

Second Day of Grouse Season in Montana

Day 2 of Grouse Season, by Dan:

Michael and I woke up early and had dogs and gear at the local cafe/store for breakfast when they opened. After a quick breakfast and cup of coffee, we were at the Aspen Grove just as the sun came up over Government Mtn. I put Michael and his dogs, Sugar and Gus, out at the top of the hill so they could hunt a strip of timber down to the grove. I drove on down the hill and enjoyed the beautiful morning and a cheap cigar.

Sugar and Gus showed up a minute before Michael and when he gets to me I am told he put up 2 birds 10 seconds after I left. We ran Blackie through the grove and found nothing. Not even a hot spot.

As we were heading up towards the area where Michael flushed the birds he noticed the fore end of his shotgun was missing. It must have got caught on some brush and pulled loose. We looked all around the area and back tracked into chest deep Bracken Fern with slim hopes of locating the tiny splinter fore end. Michael hung his hat where he noticed it missing and after about a 45 minute search he spotted a glint of light reflecting off a piece of metal and actually found it. Great relief!!! Where do you find a splinter fore end for a 1909 L.C. Smith in 16 ga? In the woods of course!

We had a sandwich made at the local Deli and moved up Bull River. Sugar and Gus worked the brush and thickets and turned up nothing in covers that had never failed us. The historic ranger station has a brand new deluxe government out house and I thought I'd give them back a little of what they've been giving me!

Michael took his dogs down the brushy edge of a small creek. I was just settling in when I heard a shot. A minute later I heard Gus doing his "treed" bark and seconds later another shot. When I caught up to Michael his grin told me he had connected. two young birds were in the game bag.

We cruised over Snake Creek Pass in search of a Blue Grouse and went up Dry Creek in search of Ruffed but never found another bird all day. Micheal found 2 bird seconds after I dropped him off and the 2 others literally caught me with my pants down. 4 grouse flushed by Michael and his dogs and 2 in his game bag.

I never saw a bird all day but a day in the woods with Michael is always soooo much fun. DWT

2011 Opening Day Grouse Season in Montana

Today was opening day of grouse season in Montana. Our friend Michael came last night and he and Dan headed out this morning with all the dogs. Well, almost all the dogs. Below is Dan's grouse report.

September 1, 2011 Grouse Report for Opening Day ~

It has been very hot and dry for six weeks. Yesterday afternoon we had a light shower and I was sure it would help scenting conditions and cool things off. Late in the evening a thunder storm rolled through and my hunting partner, Michael , and I hit the woods early to find everything soaking wet.

We put Blackie out on Fatman Mtn. and he hit a point not 100 yds. from the van. He worked the area but we never put up the bird. Grouse tricks. He hit another point right in front of us and a bird flushed in a direction that didn't allow a shot. Another flushed into a tree in front of Michael. It was a young Spruce Grouse. We don't see but a few of these each year. It too flew where Michael couldn't shoot and I wasn't ready. We saw another beside the road and stopped to put Gus out. The bird either flushed while we were gearing up, or outran us. We never put it up. We ran Gus and Sugar down several side roads and got nothing but wetter.

After lunch and a nap we headed up Elk Creek and spotted a pair of birds alongside the road. It was in a no shooting area but I take advantage of every opportunity to put a dog on a grouse. We put Mickey out for a few photos and went on up the canyon. We Ran Mickey and Sport but never found another bird.

Okay, so my husband needs a few photo lessons in which end to photograph, but I am thankful that he is at least taking his camera and bringing me pictures!

I was not disappointed with only seeing five birds. After last years poor hatch, bitter cold, and horribly wet spring, I didn't expect to see any.

We are hitting a big Aspen grove in the morning then the Bull River area. It should be dry and cool so off we go again with high hopes and happy dogs. Dan....DWT

So we have one less puppy this week. There was a small delay with Layla, but she will be going into a new home, as will Lefty, Labor Day week end. That will leave Leroy Brown. He is still not spoken for. He's a beautiful, sweet puppy, just waiting for a home.

Sure Thing Gordon Setter Puppies - 6 WK Vet Visit

We took the puppies in yesterday for their first set of vaccinations, worming, and exam, at 6 wks and 1 day old. Dr. Moody from Bonner Animal Hospital has been our Vet for over 25 years. He and his staff do a great job with our puppies. It took 6 people to get the job done, including Dan and I. But we did get it done!

Weights were very good, ranging between 6 lbs. 15 oz. and 7 lbs. 15 oz. Only 1 pound between the smallest and largest puppy. Everybody is getting their fair share of Puppy Chow.

Ears look good, heart sounds good.

First, a little "poke" and then a little banana flavored wormer! YUMMY!

Leroy is up.....and he's the last one. Wait....are we sure?

Okay, we're good, that's everyone.

Not a problem in the bunch! All healthy and happy. I am also happy to tell you that not one puppy messed up the crate for their big trip. It takes an hour to get there. About 45 minutes to get through exams for 8 puppies, another hour of chores, then an hour home. That's a BIG trip for the puppies. We take turns with the chores and the other one stays with the puppies. Never leave your dogs in a car during warm or hot weather.

Tips For Separation Anxiety in Puppies And Dogs

"Clean it up?.......I just got it the way I like it!"

Do you have a dog that goes a little crazy when you leave your home? Do they cry, whine, or howl, incessantly? Maybe they've chewed up your favorite shoes or eat the couch? If this behavior only happens when you leave home, your dog probably has separation anxiety.

"Fine! If you get the couch, I get the good pillow!"

Your dog loves you and misses you when you are gone. If they are young, they may wonder when, or if, you'll come back. They don't have the experience of your coming and going.
Dogs are pack animals and as such, they feel more comfortable when they are with others, particularly YOU, their Family. Some people have 2 dogs so they may keep each other company. And it works most times.

It's fairly easy to do training that is effective for your brand new puppy. A little more difficult if you have a dog that's been doing this for a while.

In dogs that suffer anxiety separation, if the problem isn't treated, worse behavioral problems may crop up. If it hasn't already, don't let it become habit.

Here are a few tips to try

if your going through this with your dog.

Each time you leave your pet behind and come home again, don't give them your attention immediately. Wait a few minutes until they calm down. Give them your greeting and a treat too. This way they associate your leaving with something positive.
Don't make a big deal out of leaving. If you're upset, your dog will know it and be upset as well.
Whenever possible, exercise your dog with a good run or walk so they will feel more like sleeping than tearing up your home. Give them your attention and play time. It's what they live for.
Leave your dog a few minutes at a time and come back. Conditioning, as I have said before, is very important. Get your dog, or puppy, used to your leaving them a few minutes at a time. Then try 30 minutes or an hour. Then 2 - 3 hours, if needed. If you take the time to do the minute by minute exit, a little at a time, you shouldn't have to experiment with leaving hours at a time.
Some people say leaving a tv or radio going can be helpful. The dog won't get attention, but it may fool him into thinking that he is not totally alone.

Whether you use these tips, or find your own, remember, hitting never works. Use your brain, not your hand. And most importantly, solve the problem before the behavior escalates into other problems.

Here are your weekly posed pics along with some I snapped off when they were playing. I know you will see a big difference in their growth this week. We have been putting them in their outside kennel during the day. The hot weather has been a little hard for them, not being used to all that sunshine heat, but the exercise and fresh air has been good for them. In the middle of the hot day we've been setting the hose nozzle for "Mist" and waving it over the puppies. I know it cools them down considerably. And I am happy to report, they are all smart enough to come in from the rain!! ( Sorry, I couldn't resist!)

They are almost through the process of deciding who is the leader, and who is not. Always an interesting right of passage. They are chasing balls and chewing on stuffed toys, rope toys, rubber toys, and each other, as well as us!

We have an appointment Wednesday for their 6 week Vet exam, worming, and their first set of shots. I will let you know how it goes. We expect no problems.

How Our Dogs Learn From Our Human Behavior

Ever feel like you're being watched? Well, you are! Your dog watches everything you do when you and your dog are together. If you don't believe me, just try eating a sandwich when you think he isn't looking.

Most likely, he will be begging, or staring you down for a bite of that sandwich in no time. The longer your dog has known you, the better he knows you and your habits.
Dogs are like children in the sense that they learn from repetition and reward. Unlike children, it only takes twice, maybe three times to be habit for the dog especially if food is involved. Food is a great motivator in training.

Your dog will know when you go to the kitchen to make food. He will recognize when you are leaving for the day, or a trip. He will know if you are energetic, or even sad. He knows when to beg for food or a treat, to get a response.

He knows what the can opener is for!

Our dogs learn all this by watching our cues. The movement of our arms, the tone of our voices, and our actions, all tell our dogs what is going on in their world. They watch. They learn. They remember. And they respond. What bird hunter, can't say, that he could put on his hunting vest and boots, then pick up his gun and hat and walk out of the house without his bird dog knowing? I know for a fact it can't be done in my house.

There was an interesting study done on how the canine learns and thinks, when it comes to interacting with humans. Science Daily published an article on the subject and you can read that at:

They will be eating more and more soft puppy chow and eventually switch over to hard Puppy Chow full time.

The puppies have grown and changed a lot this week. They will be 4 weeks old Tuesday. They are out growing their whelping nest! Getting louder and louder. Fussing and wrestling with each other. For about 30 minutes......then they are back to sleep!

The puppies have started playing with each other and us. It's so cute to watch them paw each other. They haven't quiet gotten their coordination yet so their still tumbling and rolling.

Today they will get their first solid food meal. I believe they are ready for it and so is JJ! We'll start them with Gerbers Baby Rice Cereal. It's very nutritious, easy to digest, and they LOVE it. We mix it with a little warm water, never milk, because it will give a puppy diarrhea. We make it soupy so it's easy for them to lap up. It takes a few days for them to get the idea and then they are all over it. Or, uh...maybe I should say it's all over them!

They have also discovered their barker. Little high pitch barks calling to Momma...."Come feed me!" Wish I could post that, but I don't have the right camera to get it on the computer.

We have 5 females and 3 males. Each puppy is assigned a name and a color.
From here out, the color corresponding with the name, will always be the same.

I realize that in this pic it looks like my husband is strangling this puppy, but I swear he isn't! Leroy Brown reufsed to wake up! Dan is holding his collar to prevent him from drooping his head down, so we may see his white.

All of the puppies appear to be perfectly healthy and thriving. They opened their eyes over the week end. They are moving around a lot, in between all those naps they take. JJ is doing well also.

Baskets of Puppies!

I took the puppies completely out of their whelping nest today for a good cleaning. I use a wicker clothes basket to put them in. I was surprised to find out that I needed 2 baskets to fit them all. These little buggers are growing like the weeds in my yard!


We've got 3 pups that have a little white on their neck or throat.

Momma Dog, JJ, enjoying a chew bone in the sunshine. She is recovering very nicely. She lost some hair last litter, but of course it came back. This time, we've been indulging her with egg beaters as a supplement. Seems to be doing a great job for her hair and skin.

We've got to decide on a theme for their names this week. That's always fun. We've just been so busy with yard work and summer chores that we haven't done it. I promise to do it soon. We will also fit them with color coded bands. It's a great way to keep up with the puppies individually.

We have 5 Females & 3 Males

We have a little female and a little male with white on their chest and neck.

JJ went into labor about 4:00 am this morning.
Thank goodness, Dan took the morning shift!
She had her 8th puppy this morning about 11:00 am.
She seems to be done now. All the puppies seem to be fine.

We'll take a closer look tomorrow and sex them. JJ seems to be doing well and is very attentive with her babies. (:

JJ at about 8 weeks - She's 4 yrs. now.

JJ is pregnant and should deliver, at 60 days, on Sunday, June 26. I'll be sure to post a picture when the big event happens. We trimmed her hair and gave her a good bath. Her whelping nest is all ready for the babies and Dan even repainted the floor. Now all we have to do is wait. I don't expect a large litter. JJ is not a big girl and she doesn't look like she is over stuffed, like they usually do. But we'll see. I just want them all to be healthy and well.

Human Glucose Moniters Used Now For Dogs

The incidence of Diabetes in dogs has increased 200% over the past 30 years. Dogs are susceptible to type 1, insulin-dependent diabetes. Diabetes in dogs, is treated similarly to the way humans are treated, with insulin shots and a diet low in carbohydrates.

Veterinarians can now use a CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitor), on a dog. The CGM is a small flexible device inserted about an inch into the skin to constantly monitor glucose concentrations. Researchers are hoping to make a smaller, less invasive version in the future. This device works great for monitoring the glucose levels. The CGM gives the veterinarian an accurate look at what is happening with your dog, while in his/her natural environment. Dogs get somewhat stressed by going into the Vets office and this eliminates that problem as well. When a dog is stressed, it is not a good time to analyze his blood.

Symptoms of diabetes in dogs are also similar to that in humans. Increased urination, thirst, hunger, and weight loss. A dog that is over weight and doesn't exercise is in danger of becoming diabetic. (Just like humans)

If untreated, or managed poorly, diabetes can lead to cataracts, blindness, liver failure and even death.

Dogs that have diabetes can have a long and happy life if they receive the proper treatment.

Feed your dog a healthy diet and make sure they get lots of exercise to avoid potential health problems like Diabetes.

Food Guarding By Puppies

What is food guarding?

It can be brought on by any situation in which a puppy feels like he must compete for his food, or if the dog thinks there is not enough food. There by, causing him to "guard" or "protect" his food bowl. Some experts suggest that feeding only once a day, may trigger this behavior. I tend to agree with that, that is my opinion and not everyone agrees.

This usually doesn't happen in a litter until the puppies are older or even in their new permanent homes after the age of 7 or 8 weeks old, if it happens at all. When the dog is eating and someone, or another dog, gets too close, he may growl or even bite. This is food guarding.

If you have a new puppy and you'd like to test him, or "condition" him, here's how to do it safely.

There are hundreds of little things you can do to "condition" your puppy for good responses. This is one. When you feed you puppy, "give" him the food. Make him sit then present him with it. Making him work for his food will earn you his respect. Then give him a few minutes to get into eating.

Do not put your face close to the bowl!
Do not lean over your dog.

Use one of those fake hands with a stick attached, or one of those back scratchers, and gently grab your dogs bowl and slide it out from under him. Note his reaction. Was it good or bad? If he growled, or bit the hand, that's not good. He's guarding his food. Seek a solution now. If he just followed the bowl and didn't get upset, he's probably not a problem. Try it several times, to be sure. And at different ages. And of course, because he behaves with you, doesn't mean he will if a stranger or a child tries to do the same thing.

Never leave a child alone around a feeding dog.

Food guarding can be a serious problem if allowed to progress. Remember, YOU are the leader and should be respected as such. You should not be growled at by your own dog...for any reason. And you should never have to fear your dog. And if you do, they will know and take advantage of it, ultimately making the situation worse. Someone will get hurt.

I have decided to incorporate this into the daily routine of taking care of puppies when we have a litter on the ground. We do a lot of things to "condition" good responses and this will be a good one to add. Amazing how one little thing can make such a big difference, but we are always looking for new ways to help us produce healthy, happy puppies.

If you have ever wondered why I don't post video of puppies, it's because the camera I presently have, is not compatible with the Mac I currently have. It sucks, but it's a necessary evil for now. So, I thought I'd take a look a what You Tube had, in the way of Gordon Setters. There's a lot more than I expected. Gordon's aren't exactly plentiful in the United States. This is a film clip of a little Gordon named, James. Cute, right?! He's a beautiful puppy and you'll have a chance to see him grow from birth to about 4 months, in 3 minutes and 33 seconds. I think you'll enjoy it!

Selective Breeding Problems

Selective breeding is not what you might think. It is NOT carefully selecting certain dogs for perfection, for breeding a healthy litter of puppies capable of doing what they are meant to do.

It IS, selecting a dog for a certain feature or characteristic that you choose to enhance from breeding to another dog who has the same feature or characteristic. Enhance is the key word there.

People have done this so much, that many of the breeds have been changed forever, for the worse. It's really sad that people have done this for their own sense of what they want such as the prettiest, fastest, strongest, biggest, smallest. Aesthetically pleasing is just not a good reason or excuse. The following is a small sample of some of the side effects of these tailored breeding practices.

In blood hounds, it is more desirable to have the most droopy eyes.
The down side? Lots of eye infections.
English Setters have high incidents of hereditary hearing loss.
Larger and larger dogs, have trouble with joint and bone issues and blindness.
The tiny little breeds often have heart problems and suffer from dislocating knee caps
And the poor little bull dog - well, some of them can't even give birth because of the huge head and narrow hips. That's just wrong.

There are dogs that go blind, can't breath properly, or have some sort of neurological problem that makes them obsess about chasing their own tail. It's really sad.

I have a real problem with this. Changing the basic make up of any animal is just wrong. They have manipulated genes to the point of disaster and it's shameful.
The same can be said for accidental breeding's where the result is a mutt. The same health problems can arise. Another excellent point for spaying and neutering.

I found a good site that lists a whole host of problems with almost every breed affected. This was originally a tv program on PBS. If you have dogs, you have to see this.

We Love to fish!

We're heading to Sunny California to visit family and then to Lake Powell in Arizona for 7 glorious days on a house boat with friends. John will be staying here the whole time to watch over things and take care of the kennel. It's nice to have a reliable friend willing to live in your house for 3 weeks!

Canine Doggie Daze At St. Judes Children's Hospital

I recently found out that St. Judes Childrens Hospital incorporates the help of a few canine friends to help cheer little ones who are suffering from cancer or leukemia. Every Tuesday morning in the atrium of the Danny Thomas Research Center, children and dogs are brought together for a big ol' hug fest. These little kids need a break to relax from the daily hospital routine of being ill.

The program is called Doggie Daze

I love St. Judes Childrens Hospital. They are not only a hospital, but also a research hospital. They are totally funded by donations, yet they NEVER turn away a child in need.

Dogue De Bordeaux and Baby - What's Wrong Here?

A Lot!

First, after you watch the video above, please promise me that you would never, ever, allow this with your dog or your child. Please.

The dog is chewing a treat bone. It's not good for a small child to be moving around this dog and close to his face and mouth. Dogs do not like to share their food and treats and can perceive this as threatening and may cause the dog to bite or even attack. A small child doesn't stand a chance around any kind of dog that decides to attack. I kept one eye closed and squinted the other while watching this because I was so afraid for this child. The owner apparently didn't know any better.
Dogs don't always "plan" their attack. Dogs are animals. They may be domesticated animals, but animals none the less. Animals move on instinct and are unpredictable. In an instant, a dog can bite a child, then immediately feel remorse because he did. Instinct caused him to react, and even though he probably knew this behavior wasn't allowed or accepted, he couldn't stop himself.

I am using this video as an example. I am aware that the Dogue De Bordeaux is known for it's gentle nature. With that said, children are unpredictable.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta,
4.7 million people get bit by dogs annually.

The biggest victims? Children, of course.

The most common place to get bit? The face.

People should think about this before trusting their infant or small child to their dog.

Secondly, lets be concerned about the dog too. Notice the child sitting on the dogs back.....on his spine? Then notice how the child sort of jumps up and down, with the careless encouragement of the adult? The dog turns round a few times which tells me he felt the pressure or pain on his spine. The child may be small, but she is big enough to cause stress fractures in the dogs spine. Dogs are not horses. They are dogs. Dogs are not meant for riding.

Please don't allow this, for your dogs safety, as well as your child's.

I think every child should have a dog at some time in their childhood. But it is important to teach a child how to properly interact with a live animal. Children should be taught to respect animals and dogs particularly, and vice versa, so they both may know and enjoy the many benefits of a shared friendship.

You Can't Sneak Up On Your Dog

Did you know that your dog is capable of learning the sound of your vehicle? No matter what you drive, your pooch will eventually learn the sound of it and know when you return home. They will hear you coming before you pull into the drive. Not only that, they will memorize the sound and rhythm of your foot steps approaching the door. They know the difference between you and your neighbors. You just can't sneak up on your dog!

So much for that surprise party!!

Not Even For Skippy Peanutbutter!

We have a Gordon who is afraid of the camera.

Actually, I believe she is afraid of the flash that goes off in her face.

Gordon's are mostly black.....you have to use a flash 90% of the time if you are going to get a decent picture. And even then, it's tough.

Our little 12 year old Gracie, hates it.

She's been like this most of her life.

We don't usually force it, but you have to get a picture once in a while!

We never really tried to analyze why, because some

Gordon's just don't seem to like getting their picture taken.

So we tried Skippy Peanut butter to coax her into the room.

She loves peanut butter!

Everything was fine.....until she saw me and the camera!

Can you feel the vacuum in the room from her retreat?

She won't even look at me, and she runs and hides as soon as she see's the camera.

Even with no escape, she will turn her head and bow it down.

Then she will run into her kennel.

And if that's not a clear enough message for me..........

she'll turn her back on me.

This has always seemed like a funny little quirk and nothing to be worried about. Until now.

Recently, Gracie started having seizures. She's had 2 now*. The vet says when she's had a few, they will put her on a medication to control them. I have wondered if the reason she doesn't like the camera flash, is because it is like the light aura that people (and possibly dogs) see just before they have a seizure. Maybe that's what she sees? She refused her favorite food just before she had the last one. I think she may have known it was coming.

Dogs are very sensitive to those things, that's how they have become assistants to people who have seizures. The dog can actually predict the seizure and warn them.

So it made me wonder, can a Gordon predict a seizure,

whether it be in someone else, or themselves?

Turns out, they can at least predict it, when they are about to have one themselves.

*NOTE: Ironically as I sat here and wrote this post, Gracie went into her third seizure. This time we were here and able to comfort her and keep her safe during the seizure. I don't know if it helped, it's hard to know how much she was aware of, but it didn't hurt.

Poor girl. There's really not much else we could do.

We're documenting them so the vet will know when and how much meds to give her. Thank goodness there is something to help her. If you've ever seen a human have a seizure, it's very scary.

It's no less scary if you witness this with your beloved pet.

Spring Envy & Swallows!

Okay, I admit it. I have spring envy!

I'm sure if you look, you'll find it in some medical journal some where.

Everyone else has pictures of colorful flowers and bright green grasses and pretty little birds.

We have mud and snow and ice. Yes, still!

So, to get into the spring frame of mind, we decided to build some swallow nests. Something we've been meaning to do for a while now. And hopefully, just in time to entice the swallows when they arrive. Dan picked up the lumber and cut the pieces out.

My friend Melayne cut the nice little holes for the doors.

She has cool tools. We don't.

I nailed them together and painted them with Krylon.


These are the tops. Like my Camo Painting?

Dan and Blackie hung up the first one today.

(It was sort of a community project.)

We couldn't have done it without Blackie. (:

He had a blast chasing snowballs and wallowing in the snow.

I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, but not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid.

As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today. Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly
of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship.

A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well. Soon my kennel door opened, and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors.
So many more to be saved. At least, I was able to save one.

I rescued a human today.

I can imagine some dogs might really think this, in a more simple form of course. But it's hard to say if we need them more, or they need us more. We certainly bring value to a dogs life and I can't imagine my life without a dog. I guess we're lucky to have each other.

The Amazing Dog and Odor Layering

If you're an experienced bird dog man or woman, you probably already know what odor layering is. But if you don't I will explain it now.

When we make a pot of vegetable beef soup, we add the individual ingredients all together in a pot and simmer it up until it smells like "soup". You may sell the bay leaf, or the beef, but in general, you smell the odor of the combined ingredients. If your dog is in the house he's smelling that same pot of soup, only he can smell the individual ingredients. The carrots, the potatoes, the meat, the spices, all individually. This is odor layering.

Odor sort of hoovers like fine baby powder then settles to the ground. Many things can interfere with a dogs ability to find odor. Ultraviolet rays and wind can break down an odor.

So doesn't it seem almost impossible for a dog to pick up on an odor that is days, or weeks old? Does to me, but they do. And some blood Hounds have actually been known to track the odor of a human down the road and down the interstate for miles and miles. I saw a test they did on "Dog Genius" on Nat Geo Wild, myself. It's hard to believe but true.
