male grouse game strutting through our place the other day.
Surprisingly, I was able to get fairly close and get some nice shots. I love these moments living in the woods!

Sport had a nice point but the bird flushed into a thicket and Dan won't
shoot, what he can't see. That's a good thing, since I am usually
lurking around somewhere trying to get a picture.

We're having a wonderful fall here in Montana and it's been nice to see the grouse population doing well again. It's getting dark earlier now and cutting in to hunting time. The grouse don't seem to mind. Although there are optimum times to increase your odds of seeing a bird, you can also find one at almost any time of the day. Funny little bird.

After 3 years of wet springs and poor grouse populations, the Ruffed Grouse is making a come back. Spring was dry and very warm and when summer kicked in, it was really hot. Perfect weather for healthy grouse chicks. We've been seeing them along the roads, as well as up the mountain. Numbers look good. There is one clutch of about 6 birds that is hanging around our place driving the dogs crazy.

Dan went out on opening day morning. He only saw 3 birds and no birds were shot.
In the afternoon, I joined him for a drive up Fat Man mountain. In spite of all the fires, the sky was fairly clear and it was a beautiful day.

We came across a bird in the road. We waited for it to leave the road then put Sport out first. He hit scent where the birds had been, but had left. Then he managed to get turned around and on a point. One flushed and Dan got it. Several others came out, but no good shot could be made.

Next, we let Mickey out on a grouse that was standing between a row of bushes and the road. She worked the area, then went on point. There must have been eight or nine birds in that clutch flying out in different directions. Dan got one. All of the rest flushed back over the bushes, over Mickey, and into the woods. A safe shot was not available.
In all, we kicked up 5 separate clutches, and about 26 birds. We were happy to see so many grouse in one afternoon. It was a good opening day of Grouse Season in Montana!
http://www.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=7201631721768549372
Karen Thomason/Gordon Setter Crossinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05227448504530795035noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201631721768549372.post-25560663986041353962014-12-27T13:44:00.000-07:002015-10-20T18:41:01.096-06:00Separation Anxiety I came across a video on You Tube of a dog with anxiety issues. When the owner left, the dog would pace around, cry, and howl. He put a GO-PRO camera on his dog and that's when he learned he had a problem. He has a clever way of easing the dogs tension.
Especially for those dog owners who visit dog parks or have to walk their dog in public. I believe I would act accordingly, if I saw a dog wearing on of these collars.
So, it's mud season in Montana. That means a lot of muddy foot prints to clean up. I use rugs at the front door and that catches most of it. What is left, is usually wiped off on the rugs I have inside the doorway. Rugs are fairly cheap and easy to replace.

My back porch, my sanctuary, my bright spot in the woods, is painted light cream to bring in more light and warmth. It's my favorite spot in the summertime. I had rather it not get covered with little muddy paw prints that I can't wash off until we hook up summer hoses again.

I had the great idea of blocking the small entry way of the porch, with a lawn chair. I was sure the dogs would not push it out of the way and enter the porch. And I was right. They did not push it out of the way.

JJ ran through it, getting stuck between the canvas seat and the metal base carrying it about 8 feet! She was stuck so tight, Dan had to cut up the seat of the chair to free her. It wasn't pretty. You could tell she was embarrassed. I was too.

I enjoyed the video because I love watching well trained dogs in play or work. But more than that, it stood out to me , that not only were these dogs well trained, they seemed very happy in doing what they were doing.

That is good training. Train your dog in a way that makes him/her "want" to do the trick you are teaching. Dogs naturally want to please their owners. Work with that. With a tiny little treat, a reasonable amount of respect, a little bit of time, and a lot of praise, you can train your dog to do many things.

There are many good videos out there if you need help. Find the training techniques that most fit you and your breed of dog. A well trained dog, is a well loved dog.

Enjoy the video!

I love this idea. As breeders, we already do most of the things on this list. I just never really thought about them as a list, to accomplish every day with my puppies. But now, I will.
The idea is, to expose your puppies to as many different situations as possible. It teaches them to think, how to solve problems, and how to accomplish tasks. It helps them to have more confidence when they are out in the world.

Puppies should be exposed to different kinds of experiences, to help prepare them for their new home, new family, and new stomping grounds. Here's the list of Sevens, that every puppy should experience.

The Rule of Sevens

Seven different types of surfaces:
carpet, concrete, wood, vinyl, grass, dirt, gravel, wood chips.

Seven different types of play objects:
big balls, small balls, soft fabric toys, fuzzy toys, squeaky toys, paper or cardboard items, metal items, sticks, or hose pieces.

NOTE: If you give your puppies paper or cardboard, it should be with supervision only. Sometimes puppies will swallow paper, and really shouldn't.

Seven different locations:
front yard, backyard, basement, kitchen, car, garage, laundry room, bathroom, woods.

Seven new people:
children and older adults, a person with a cane, someone in a wheelchair, someone with a walker.
Seven different eating locations:

Of course, you have probably figured out by now, that Seven isn't a magic number, it's just a suggestion, a starting place. But you get the idea....to expose your litter of puppies to as many obstacles, challenges, problems, and solutions, as possible. This sort of handling and training should start around 3 weeks old. It can be used with any litter, any dog type. You can even personalize it, to your breed.

I would add, when our puppies are about 3 - 4 weeks old, we start taking them into the woods. Easy walks at first, just to get them used to sticks and rocks, and learning how to climb over logs. Even tall grass in the face of a puppy can be frightening until they push through it. Once they do, they have accomplished something and they feel very proud. Sometimes a blue jay or squirrel will run by or land near by. This is all good experience for a young puppy, but especially with hunting breeds. A hunting dog should have the confidence to go out ahead of his hunter, to find the birds. All of this prep work will help him do that.

If your beloved dog, or cat, suddenly started getting tumors on his body, and those tumors were diagnosed as cancer, would you consider using cannabis oil to treat him?

Cannabis is known by it's nick name, "marijuana" and is from the Hemp plant. Hemp, non psychoative, is used for industrial purposes such as cloth, fiber, rope, oils, building materials, and grease. Cannabis, with active THC, is used medicinally and recreationally. Cannabis is illegal, federally, but 19 states plus Washington DC, have legalized it for medicinal use. Colorado and Washington State have legalized small amounts for recreational purposes.

Cannabis is used and grown all over the world. It has been around since the time of man. It has been successfully used for medicinal purposes in almost every country in the world. There has never been a death from using cannabis.

Cannabis/Hemp was made illegal in 1937 because of industrial competition and racism. The federal government contends that there is no medical use for cannabis. Yet, they own a patent on the cannabinoids in cannabis, as a cancer cure. U.S. PATENT

Cannabis has been shown in studies to shrink tumors and cause cancer cells to commit suicide, without ever harming a healthy cell, or patient in any way. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6-O1ehJte0

I've heard of several people curing their dog or cat, by using cannabis oil. Cannabis oil is made by extracting the powerful healing oils of cannabis and concentrating it into a thick oil. This oil is then given orally, or dabbed onto a visible tumor, or both, from 30 to 90 days. This link, will show you, in pictures, the progress of a tumor on a 7 year old Boxer, being treated with this oil.
http://www.mrnice.nl/forum/9-patients-forum/8706-treating-cancer-cannabis-patient-7-year-old-boxer-dog.html

Many cannabis studies, including one that just came out, at the National Cancer Institute, at the National Institutes of Health, and funded by the public and Congress, are showing that cannabis kills cancer cells.

"Cannabis has been shown to kill cancer cells in the laboratory and to affect the immune system."

"Cannabis and cannabinoids have been studied in the laboratory and the clinic for relief of pain, nausea and vomiting, anxiety, and loss of appetite"

The best information I have found about cannabis, is a video called What If Cannabis Cures Cancer I encourage you to see it, for your own benefit, as well as your pet's.

If I had known this 3 years ago when Happy, my beloved Gordon Setter, got cancerous sores, I would have tried it. It's too late for him. But I have been educated on cannabis. Once you know the truth, it's hard to go back. The laws are changing. People are getting educated. It's only a matter of time until it will be available for you or your pets.

So, would you use it to save your pet?
Another great Gordon Setter has passed. She has left this earth and her sickness behind for a much better place. As with all Gordons, we grieve her loss.

Erin was loved and owned by Art & Darlene Wells of Maryland. Art is an avid hunter and loved getting his Gordon's in the woods. Erin loved BIRDS with a passion. Erin had a digestive problem so Art and Darlene made her home made food to keep her on a healthy diet. That must have been a lot of trouble, but that didn't stop them. They loved Erin. She was part of their family.
Erin & Art

In Art's Words....

We lost Erin, Springset Shining Example, on Friday morning when she collapsed and died from a massive seizure.

She was a great little dog and a wonderful companion. When I sat down at my desk, she was always at my feet. I couldn't even go to the bathroom without her laying by the door waiting for me to come out. I still find myself looking around me before I take a step. I'm pretty sure I'll be doing that for some time.

Erin was a bird maniac and spent her days stalking everything in the yard with her buddy Angel. She will be greatly missed. I've been spending lots of time with Angel but I know she misses her pal too.
I'm sure by now you have heard about the dangers of GMO's in our food.

GMO - Genetically modified organism, is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. Crossing genes in plants or animals.

One company, Monsanto, owns the So-called “Bt corn” that is equipped with a gene from the soil bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), which produces Bt-toxin—a pesticide that breaks open the stomach of certain insects and kills them. That's what they have done with corn, soy, cotton, and canola. If you eat corn, or feed corn, you have it inside of you, and it's inside your pets. Apparently, GMO'S have been invading our food and animal feed for about 20 years. And apparently, our government is okay with that. I almost got sick, literally, when I read that.

For more:http://www.responsibletechnology.org/gmo-dangers

It's known to cause all kinds of health problems in dogs, goats, pigs, mice and cows, including sterility, miscarriages, intestinal problems, liver and kidney problems, aggression in pigs, eating problems, itching, allergies, and death.

Rats fed with GMO Corn, grew massive tumors

The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM), believes that GMO'S are so dangerous to our health, that they recommend non-GMO diets for all people and all animals. I agree.

Recently, we have started buying organic and non GMO, wherever and whenever we can. Very little processed food, natural sugar and flour. We are also planting our own vegetables and herbs. Not an easy thing to do in Northwest Montana. It's impossible to get away from GMO'S completely. They claim that about 85% of corn and 90% of soy, is GMO. Soy, and even corn is in a lot of processed food products in one form or another. Just check the labels. You may be shocked. And most states don't require labels to show that it is GMO.

Organic and GMO free, are more expensive, and harder to find. But I think it's worth it if you can afford it. You might find that you feel better, have more energy, and are healthier in general. Not sure what I'll do with my dog's food yet. I want to change that too. One step at a time!

And one last note, I don't remember where I read it, but a farmer did some experimenting with GMO food, and non-GMO food with his dog and pigs. He would place two food containers down. One GMO food, one Non-GMO. EVERY TIME, whether it was the pigs, or the dogs, they would choose the NON-GMO food. Think about that!

Opening day today. We have had three cold wet springs in a row and the Grouse population is as low as I have ever seen. I have not shot a bird for two years and probably won't shoot any this season either. It's that bad.

We did go up Elk Creek this afternoon and found a bird in the road. Mickey had fun and enjoyed a bit of bird scent in the nostrils.

I ran Blackie at the upper end of the canyon and he never even got birdie. Not even a hot spot. We had a grouse streak across the road in front of the van and put Mick out again to get a little experience. I ran her downhill from the spring area and she never found a thing.

We did see a flock of turkeys on the way home. The weather does not seem to effect the turkey hatch like it hurts the grouse. We often see hen turkeys with 3 different sized chicks. I'll get Sport out over on Fat Man Mountain tomorrow. He needs some work and I can always use the exercise.
I'm proud to say that Sure Thing Gordon Setters Kennels, made a small donation to help Clifford. We received a thank you card and an invitation to his "Welcome Home" party. Unfortunately, it was in Ohio. But we're sure it was a great party! We love you Clifford! And we love the seniors at Rocky River Senior Home.

Clifford also has his own web page: Clifford's Adventures @ http://www.cliffordsharborcourtadventures.com/
I spent the past two Fridays working at Panhandle Animal Shelter and want to let all our readers know what a wonderful experience it was. The shelter is extremely clean and well organized. I met some great folks who are dedicated to dogs in need. Pat, in the office, is a very friendly lady who loves dogs as much as I do. Brian Welch, the Kennel Technician, hunts grouse and ducks with his Pointing Lab. We obviously hit it off immediately.
Lady chases cars and Robby is a pit bull who was used in the fighting ring. Robby's ears are shredded and someone surgically removed his lips so his opponent could not get a grip on him. It's very sad.
If you can't adopt a dog, you can sponsor a kennel. I was surprised that it was only $150 per year. The donation is tax deductible and a plaque is placed on a kennel naming the donor.

If you should choose to adopt a dog, there is a small fee which covers the costs of neutering and vaccinations. The cost is insignificant, compared to the love one receives in return from a rescued dog. If you can't adopt a dog you can always stop by your local shelter and take a dog for a walk. I walked four dogs each visit. The walks were a mile long, so I got in four miles myself which is good for my heart condition and high blood sugar, A win win deal for both me and the dogs.

Stop by your local shelter and lend a hand. I mopped the floor and washed windows on my first visit. (Please do not tell Karen I am capable of such tasks. She might expect me to do this at home!) If you have skills as a carpenter or electrician make yourself available. Or just stop by to give a dog a walk or a hug. It will do you heart good in more ways than one.
If you're a dog lover, or especially a Gordon Setter lover, there is a way for you to volunteer to help with the Gordon Setter Rescue Program, with the Gordon Setter Club of America. The G.S. Rescue sets up adoptions all over the country. Sometimes a dog is matched with a person who is 2 or 3 or more, states away from the dog who needs to be rescued. Being responsible and caring, The GSCA doesn't like to ship or send a dog into a home that they have not had an opportunity to visit.

The G.S. Rescue Program needs people to be available, for their area, to visit a possible Gordon Setter home. They would like to know that the person who wants to adopt, has the facilities needed for a Gordon Setter and that the person would give the Gordon a good, safe home, before shipping a dog so far.
They are always looking for volunteers to assist with the home visits.
